Biggest Concerns About Cloud Security

Security in the Cloud causes concern for many, according to a recent poll of visitors to the World Hosting Days conducted by Interxion and Amsio.

SCHIPHOL-RIJK, April 3, 2017 – The Cloud services- and Internet infrastructure-sector comes together every year at the ‘World Hosting Days’, Europe’s largest trade fair for the industry. With more than 120 presentations, 200 exhibitors and over 6,500 attendees, the conference offers insight into the state of this business sector. Interxion (NYSE: INXN), European provider of carrier-neutral data center and cloud services, in collaboration with managed- and cloud services provider, Amsio, annually surveys the conference attendees. The most striking results this year:

Security as main concern
The biggest concern in the public cloud is security, according to an absolute majority of respondents (64%). Also, compliance (25%) and lack of local support (21%) are in the top three biggest concerns about the public cloud. The extent to which the public cloud is adjustable (16%) and the variable cost (13%) of the public cloud were also mentioned as causes for concern, as is the absence of custom-made solutions (13%).

Within Borders
Assurance that data is held within national borders was important for a majority of (59%) of respondents. This can be explained, for example, with the Brexit and Privacy Shield: companies want to be sure that they comply with European legislation in order to serve their customers.

Hosting Sector
A majority (24%) of respondents see scalability as the biggest difference between the services of a local hosting provider and the public cloud. That might explain why 81% think that most hosting providers in three years’ time will move to offer managed services in the public cloud. Seventy-six percent of respondents see market consolidation among managed service providers, similar to the consolidation taking place in shared hosting providers.

Data Center Selection
The visitors were also asked what they look for when choosing a data center. Connectivity was considered of above average importance by 84%. Also, customer service is for 74% of above average importance, as well as physical security for 61% of respondents.

Profile of Respondents
The largest group, 30% of respondents, came from Germany. The Netherlands was well represented with 24%. Ten percent of the respondents were American. Almost half of the respondents work in organizations with more than 50 employees. Respondents work primarily for Hosting Service providers (31%), Independent Software Vendors (23%) or hardware providers (12%).
